We recently had to cancel a trip to Roatan because one of us ended up in the hospital shortly before we were due to travel. Having good travel insurance was paramount to us not having to forfeit thousands of dollars in airfare/resort fees while cancelling the holiday. It also reduced a tremendous amount of anxiety at an already stressful time.

But many people don’t even look at travel insurance or calculate the possibility of needing it while planning their vacation. A smart traveller has insurance pre-travel as well as while actually on holiday. There are tons of insurance plans with varying degrees of coverage as well as costs. Where do you begin?

Here’s a good place to start:

TravelBloggers.ca,

Reviews.com have looked at 22 of the nation’s top providers to find the ones that offer primary medical coverage, generous limits, few exclusions, and top-notch customer service. They may or may not be available to you in your country, but the information will certainly be of value to you, as you select the appropriate insurance coverage for your next trip. Another great resource is a website called Consumers Advocate.org

Things happen — lost luggage, flight delays, illness, lost luggage, and unfortunately even natural disasters at times. For this reason, they’ve tried out 15 different industry providers and compared their coverage types, customer assistance services, and of course their prices to help future travelers make a decision for themselves. There’s plenty of additional information on this very useful site.  Click HERE to go to the site

Tragic situations can happen anywhere at any time – make sure you have good coverage for your needs… and hope that you’ll never need to make a claim – but if you do, you’ll be OK.
