Germany: A Day Trip To Heppenheimer & Michelstadt

Michelstadt Germany, TravelBloggers.ca, Iain Shankland, Gail Shankland

During our most recent trip to Germany, we went there with only one thing in mind – relax, no crazy driving all over the country to see the sights. This was our “visit friends tour and chill trip.” But we HAD to see a couple of towns – it just wouldn’t be a trip without that! So, we agreed that we’d only do our “towning” on one day. With that in mind, off we went to Heppenheimer (birthplace of F1 driver Sebastien Vettal) and Michelstadt which is just up the road… sort of.

Heppenheimer – is located about 35 minutes north of Heidelberg. The car we had didn’t have a navigation system – our first in all our visits to Germany, so we had to rely on  using Waze to guide us, we actually passed the old town and headed off into the countryside before being told to park in a tiny dead end street in the middle of nowhere. Heading back into town I spotted a familiar looking building from pictures I’d seen on Germany Tourism’s Facebook/Instagram page. Knowing that I had to turn left to get close to the town, we went back to the main street into Heppenheimer, turned left and then left again into the old town.

Marktstrasse [///mammal.home.mile] is always the best place to start from or get to in any tour of old German towns/cities and somehow we managed to find it walking completely blind and just following tiny streets. The old town is quaint, but not very big, so after a short walk around we went looking for lunch.

Friedrichstraße is a pedestrian-only street with lots of restaurants/café’s to choose from and we stopped there for a quick bite to eat and then headed off to our second destination… Michelstadt.

Michelstadt – is about 45 minutes away from Heppenheimer and we got a nice leisurely tour through parts of Germany we’d never see if it wasn’t for this trip. It took longer than expected, but was well worth the drive. Michelstadt is a much larger town and the buildings are very unique – you’ve probably seen pictures of them, but didn’t know where they were taken.

We parked here – ///symphony.commands.finest which was very convenient, just off the main road and just a quick stroll to the old town via some narrow streets. We wouldn’t advise trying to get closer to the old town to park because the streets are very narrow and the busses even have issues driving there – besides there’s only one parking location – good luck finding it! From the car park, turn right on Hammerweg and left onto Neutorstrasse – from there you’re essentially in the old town so get the camera out!

You’ve probably seen plenty of pictures of the Rathaus (Historic City Hall) ///budget.episode.bitters and that is right in the centre of the small Marktstrasse. There’s tons to see, so take your time and enjoy the sights.

Conclusion…
We were late in heading out on the day we took our trip – we didn’t leave till around noon. If we’d have left on our usual expedition-type trip we’d have been on the road by 9am and have more time to visit more towns. If you want to extend your day, I’d recommend checking out the Technik Museum Sinsheim – doing that would have made it a nice neat loop.
