Winter turns Niagara into a frosty playground, proving the region shines, long after the Falls’ mist freezes. We’ve braved the cold for lights, wine and New Year’s parties – trust us, it’s worth bundling up for!
Here’s your guide to Niagara’s chilliest, cheeriest season…
Niagara Falls – Winter Festival of Lights
From mid-November through early January (e.g., November 15, 2025 – January 4, 2026), Canada’s longest-running free light fest dazzles with 3+ million lights and 75+ displays, 21 nights of fireworks and 51 nights of the Hot Chocolate Trail.
The Niagara Parkway and Dufferin Islands glow with interactive setups and a Hot Chocolate Trail to warm you up. Weekly fireworks and nightly Falls’ illuminations (6pm, 7pm, 8pm) seal the deal – it’s magical and best of all – free!

Niagara Falls – New Year’s Celebration
December 31st turns Niagara Falls into a free outdoor concert hotspot. Past lineups like Keith Urban and Blue Rodeo have rocked Queen Victoria Park – skip the spotty TV coverage and join the party. It’s cold, but the music and midnight fireworks make it a bucket-list Niagara New Year’s Eve.

Niagara Icewine Festival
Three January weekends transform Niagara into a winter wine wonderland. From Stoney Creek to Niagara-on-the-Lake – wineries, breweries, and restaurants celebrate Icewine with tastings, gala dinners, and chestnut roasts.
Don’t forget to pick up an Icewine Discovery Pass that gives you many specials with the wineries around Niagara.
(January 9-11, 16-18 & 23-25, 2026)

The Cool As Ice Gala at Niagara Power Station (January 31, 2026 – ///smart.shimmering.navigable ) is a luxe highlight – 35+ wineries and gourmet bites. A Discovery Pass unlocks six curated experiences – perfect for oenophiles like us! We’ve been numerous times and it never disappoints – food you’d probably never try at any other time and wine from wineries you probably have never heard of.

- Where: Region-wide;
- What3Words: Various Locations. Cool As Ice Gala ///smart.shimmering.navigable

Niagara-On-The-Lake Icewine Festival
Running alongside the broader Icewine Fest, NOTL’s version (around the third weekend in January) shuts down its heritage streets for ice bars, cocktail contests, and outdoor dining. This picture-perfect town – home to most of Ontario’s vineyards – sparkles after a snowfall. We hate the cold (-10°C to -25°C), but the vibe’s worth it.
Summer Bonus: catch the Shaw Festival or take in a round of golf at North America’s oldest golf course.
