SAN FRANCISCO, May 7, 2013 /CNW/ – Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the 10 most popular destinations for Canadian travellers booking hotels over Victoria Day Weekend 2013 (May 18-20). This year, more Canadians are staying in Canada, with domestic destinations like Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa gaining popularity and newcomer Quebec City joining the list. Still, perennial favorite New York City tops the list.

The good news is that regardless of where travellers want to venture to this holiday, they can now score even deeper discounts with Hotwire’s biggest sale ever – the “Great Weekend Sale” – offering folks up to 70 percent off weekend Hot Rate hotel bookings made throughout the month of May. [“Great Weekend Sale” ends 5/31/13. Saturday night stay required. Hotwire Hot Rate hotels only]

“Hotwire prices are down in eight of the ten most booked cities for Victoria Day, so the trend was already good for holiday travel, and with the ‘Great Weekend’ sale coinciding with Victoria Day, this is an ideal year for travellers to take advantage of great hotel deals, no matter where they plan to celebrate.” said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, vice president of the Hotwire Group. “Whether you’re opting to stay in Canada or prefer visiting our neighbors to the south, nothing gets you ready for warmer weather like a long weekend trip to celebrate the unofficial start of summer.”

New York City came out as the frontrunner for Victoria Day Weekend bookings. With spring weather in full effect, visitors can enjoy all that the Big Apple has to offer, both indoors and outdoors. Families can take a guided tour through Central Park via the Central Park Conservancy, or head over to the Harlem Meer to enjoy an afternoon of catch-and-release fishing.

While New York City tops the list this year, Canada’s own Montreal jumps up one spot to number two on this year’s list and hosts a variety of outdoor festivals—including an outdoor dance party in Parc Jean-Drapeau—to kick off the summer season.

Also rising one spot from last year, Vancouver (#3) offers festive outdoor activities including a variety of night markets. During the daytime, visitors can head to Kitsilano Beach to soak up some sun. Other popular destinations this year include Ottawa and Toronto, which come in at numbers four and five, respectively, with Ottawa up one spot and Toronto down three spots from the 2012 rankings.

Hotwire’s ten most popular Victoria Day destinations are:
