We posted the video of our day at Cannstatter Volksfest in 2018, but forgot to add the article… oops. Well here’s the article, better late than never ;>)

Oktoberfest…. It’s as German as high-quality cars, the autobahn and superb beer.

In this instalment from our recent Germany trip, we’ve covered the beautiful medieval city of Tübingen and the amazing Lichtenstein Castle from our base just outside of Speyer/Hockenheim. To complete the day’s trifecta we ended the day back in Stuttgart at the Cannstatter Volksfest to celebrate Oktoberfest. It wasn’t planned specifically, but 2018 is the 200th anniversary of the festival. Talk about perfect timing!!

Sitting right on the Neckar River in Stuttgart, the Cannstatter Volksfest can’t be missed if you’re in the region at the very end of September or beginning of October. More than just a beer party, the Cannstatter Volksfest is one of the largest funfair in Europe and attracts about 4 million visitors every year!

We were last here in 2012 and things have changed a bit since then. The parking has been moved to one location – a garage on the Mercedesstraße (Parkplatz P10 – €6) followed by a 1 km walk to the closest entrance at the train station. There another entrance at the far end – beside the Flea Market, but good luck finding it… or parking anywhere close. You will be searched at the gate, but entrance is free.

It’s truly a spectacular sight to see people of all ages enjoying themselves with the enormous rides that scare the crap out of you, to the festival tents, a colourful flea market and many other attractions that include all types of delicious food…and of course the beer!

Cannstatter Volksfest, Oktoberfest, TravelBloggers.ca, Iain Shankland, Gail ShanklandThis is the second-largest Oktoberfest in the world (Munich is number 1), but it’s the better one to visit if you want to enjoy yourself without dodging puke piles and drunk men and have some €uros left in your pocket at the end of the evening. Cannstatter Volksfest is for families and non-party-puke drunks (of course you get a little bit of that, it comes with the territory).

Beer is much cheaper (in our personal opinion better as well) and you don’t have to pay to get into the tents. At €10 per tent the Munich event will financially ruin you just visiting the tents!

At 11pm sharp everything shuts down and everyone is thrown out.

This should be your number one #BucketList… everything else is unimportant.
